Job Description
The Texas A&M Department of Soil and Crop Sciences announces a vacancy for the position of Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist - Cotton located at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center – Lubbock. The position is a 12-month, non-tenure track position responsible for leadership in cotton production for the Texas High Plains and development of educational programs and materials related to the profitable, and sustainable production of cotton in a semi-arid environment. The successful candidate will interact with county extension agents, other extension specialists and research faculty, and extension Regional Program Leaders to lead successful educational programs and materials designed to help cotton producers in the Texas High Plains region.
The successful candidate will also be expected to interact with agronomic research scientists at Texas A&M, other AgriLife Research and Extension Centers, and other universities and from the departments of Entomology, Plant Pathology, Agricultural Economics Biological and Agricultural Engineering, and other appropriate entities to develop new knowledge regarding the science of cotton production. The successful candidate will be expected to lead an extramurally funded program in cotton production, publish results in refereed journals, and train graduate students as appropriate. The successful candidate will also demonstrate leadership in professional organizations and societies and develop a state and national reputation for excellence.
Responsibilities: -Program Planning -assist CEAs and crop committees in planning educational meetings, tours and demonstrations related to agronomic subject matter -assist CEAs in planning county demonstration projects -cooperate with private organizations in developing educational programs -communicate to DEAs opportunities for assisting CEAs, county committees and specific clientele groups in planning programs -plan and coordinate educational programs with appropriate DEAs, CEAs and specialists -communicate with DEAs concerns, needs, and opportunities for CEA training -assist DEAs, specialists and CEAs in planning agent training -review research developments and interpret findings -evaluate and report program results.
-Faculty and Staff Training/Assistance -conduct in-service training on current subject matter development and teaching methods -develop and provide agronomic training programs based on applicable research data -respond to CEAs' and specialists' requests for subject matter and program planning assistance -provide individual training to CEAs in counties served -provide field result demonstration training and assistance to CEAs -report agent and staff training activities -assist Extension faculty in determining and understanding clientele's needs.
-Implementation of Educational Programs -develop and implement agronomy educational programs based on applicable research results -use individual and group teaching methods in community, county and area educational programs -cooperate with CEAs and fellow specialists in establishing and conducting demonstrations -design and conduct appropriate agronomy result demonstrations and applied research trials -provide direct assistance to individuals and clientele groups with educational programs -provide effective educational information through formal and informal programs -review research developments and interpret findings for use in local educational programs -develop timely and factual publications -utilize media resources including the print media, radio and TV for programs -prepare timely information letters -develop sound educational programs -conduct timely evaluations of projects and programs.
-Financial and Program Support of Extension Activities -inform organizations, groups and agencies of on-going TCE programs -motivate and contribute to 790 program unit and task forces -advise research staff on research needs and program support -serve on Center, Departmental, Agency and University Committees -solicit grant support -establish and maintain liaison with sponsors and grant donors -develop individual plan of work -report job activities to supervisors.
-Coordination and Cooperation -coordinate programs with other agencies and organizations -communicate information of professional interest to Extension and research staffs -establish and maintain liaison and public relations with commodity groups, organizations, clientele groups and agencies -cooperate with other agencies and organizations in developing educational programs -cooperate with research staff in assessing research needs and data interpretation -develop effective working relationships across departments, agencies and colleges -serve on unit, departmental, agency, and university committees.
-Other: -participate in professional organizations -participate in technical subject matter meetings and tours -participate in 'in-house' discussions relating to subject matter with research, Extension, other agencies and organization staffs -maintain comprehensive knowledge and understanding of agronomic subject matter -serve in leadership positions in professional organizations.

Education and Experience:
Preferred - doctoral degree that aligns with the programmatic work of the agency, unit and/or position - Agronomy, Crop Science, Soil Science or closely related field
Preferred – published research results in refereed journals, and land grant university experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: -Excellent oral, written, and electronic communication skills. Ability to effectively use personal computer to communicate, prepare proposals to include cost information on spread sheet as applicable, and provide reports of activities. Ability to effectively communicate with faculty students and staff. Ability to multi task and work cooperatively with others.
