Assistant Specialist in Agricultural Sciences
The Department of Botany and Plant Sciences at the University of California invites applicants for a full-time Assistant Specialist in agronomy, horticulture science, and plant sciences to conduct applied research in Dr. El-Kereamy's Lab.
The Assistant Specialist will work at UC Lindcove Research and Extension Center (LREC), Exeter, CA to achieve the following objectives:
Determine the optimum level of growing conditions to optimize budwood production at the Citrus Clonal Protection Program at LREC (CCPP-LFF).
Implement the results of the project at the CCPP-LFF standard operating procedures.
Under the direction of the 2 co-leaders (Dr. Ashraf El-Kereamy and Dr. Georgios Vidalkis), the Assistant Specialist in this project will perform trials to:
* Determine the factors that need to be studied and design a work plan, by carrying leaf nutrients analysis, photosynthesis measurements and environmental conditions monitoring, that may affect budwood source trees.
* Design trials to study the effect of new growing methods to optimize budwood production such as the effects of nitrogen, potassium and calcium on potted budwood source trees performance, in terms of vegetative growth and wood maturation.
* Measuring light properties and determine the adequate light quantity and quality required for a premium budwood production inside the CCPP-LFF protective structures.
* Study the effect of spacing among trees of tree performance for budwood production and calculate production needs of citrus seedlings/rootstocks to support CCPP-LFF functions.
* Test various protocols for heat and cold protection (e.g., application of compounds and effect on budwood quality.)
* Carry out DNA extraction for genetic characterization of different Vis.
Required qualifications at time of application for this position include minimum of Bachelor of Science in plant science or related disciplines. And Master of science degree at the time of hire.
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
Ph.D. in plant sciences or related disciplines.
Additional qualifications at time of hire for this position include:
* Experience in research and possess a valid California driver license
* Advancement through the assistant specialist ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input.
A reasonable estimate for this position is $56,600-$63,000.
