The Department of Horticulture invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month, tenure-track (annual) Assistant Professor position.
This position will conduct research on genome editing and functional gene analysis of specialty crops that are economically important to Oregon agriculture. Two months of summer salary will be provided on a fixed-term basis for three years. Thereafter, the faculty member will be expected to generate two months of summer salary. The incumbent will be responsible for writing grants or securing gifts or contracts for summer salary and operating expenses.
With this position, OSU will be well positioned to contribute strongly to this innovative and emerging area of genetic research. Gene editing and related biotechnologies will have great potential for impact as tools in the plant breeder's toolbox for manipulating traits while maintaining the good attributes of the cultivar, as well as more fundamental studies to explore gene function. Although this position could apply to many specialty crops, there is immediate interest in hazelnut, potato, vegetables, nursery crops, mint, berries, wine grapes, and cannabis. The research discoveries and impacts are to be communicated to peers, practitioners, and citizens.

The Department of Horticulture is a comprehensive department with active research, Extension, and resident instruction missions. The department serves a diverse and changing horticultural industry and strives to serve the horticultural needs of all citizens of Oregon. To meet these missions, the department has approximately 60 faculty, of which 60% are on-campus and 40% at off-campus locations. Off-campus faculty are located at Experiment Stations and County Extension offices throughout the state. The Department of Horticulture faculty collaborates with USDA-Agricultural Research Service researchers in Corvallis and at the Mid-Columbia Agricultural Research and Extension Center.
Typically requires PhD or terminal degree (Masters for some Extension positions and MLS for Library positions), demonstrated ability to teach in a classroom Extension, or other setting, and develop a research program in the academic discipline/unit.
Requirements :
Ph.D. in Genetics, Plant Science, Horticulture, Agronomy or other relevant discipline.
Research experience in modern gene editing tools.
Research experience in micropropagation and other plant tissue culture techniques.
Potential to develop academic research and teaching programs in gene editing and functional analysis.
Potential to secure extramural funding.
Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity as it relates to teaching and mentoring students, and collaborating on research projects with other scientists.
Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications, and strong scientific writing and technical presentation skills (in English).
