The Department of Horticultural Science seeks a non-tenure track, with non-tenure track promotion (i.e., Assistant, Associate, Full Research Professor) Research Assistant Professor with responsibilities for research. The appointment term will be a 12-month, full-time appointment.
Responsibilities Research (100%)
Develop or enhance a nationally-recognized research program in your area of expertise with interdisciplinary approaches to scientific discovery
Identify, pursue and obtain diverse external funding opportunities (grants, contracts, subcontracts, gifts) for 100% support in the described research area(s). This position is entirely self-funded.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams both within the university and beyond, including researchers from horticulture within any/all horticultural commodities, ecology, landscape architecture, and related fields. Integrate expertise into interdisciplinary research projects, fostering collaborative relationships and leveraging diverse perspectives to address complex challenges.
Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with key stakeholders relevant to horticulture, including growers, industry associations, government agencies, non-profit organizations, consumers, and community representatives.
Mentor and supervise undergraduate students in their research endeavors (UROP grants, directed studies, directed research) and development as professional scientists.
Mentor and supervise graduate students, providing guidance and support for their research projects and professional development.
Required Qualifications
PhD degree in Horticulture, Agronomy, Plant Science, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Natural Resources, Environmental Psychology, Environmental Sociology, or a related field with a focus on research related to horticultural science.
Proven track record in securing external research funding through grants or contracts.
Demonstrated expertise in applying research methods and analysis techniques to horticultural and/or environmental problems.
Proven track record of conducting and publishing horticultural science-focused research in academic journals.
Strong knowledge of horticulture or related agricultural fields.
Strong oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate research findings to both academic and non-academic audiences.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Strong organizational and project management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Postdoctoral experience in horticultural research related to horticulture or agricultural systems.
Experience in interdisciplinary research and collaborating with researchers from diverse fields.
Experience mentoring and supervising students in research.
Active engagement in professional networks and collaborations within the field of horticulture.
Demonstrated experience in and an ongoing commitment to working effectively with and across diverse communities and identities.
