Job Description

Ice sheets play an important role in climate dynamics, but we do not fully understand how they destabilize. While modern observations can be used to study short-term trends, we must use the geologic record to explore how ice sheets respond to climate over thousands of years. One tool we can use to do this is called ice-rafted debris (IRD), which is the sediment dropped by icebergs onto the ocean floor. By studying these sediments, especially during large iceberg discharge events that occurred in the past, we can learn more about ice sheet behavior. The main task of this project is to analyze specific minerals (hornblende) in the IRD to figure out which North Atlantic ice sheets experienced dramatic discharge events during the last glacial period thousands of years ago. This research will help improve iceberg models for ongoing studies related to polar climates.

Job Responsibilities:

• Work with marine sediment samples, specifically sand-sized grains of hornblende, using a microscope to identify and pick out relevant grains for analysis.
• Follow detailed instructions and perform sieving and picking of these sand grains accurately.
• Record and track your work in a scientific and organized manner.
• Collaborate with Danielle LeBlanc, a postdoctoral investigator, for training and guidance throughout the project.

Skills & Qualifications:

• Attention to Detail: This work requires patience and careful attention to the microscopic details of the samples.
• Interest in Earth Science: While some background in Earth science coursework is helpful, enthusiasm and curiosity about Earth sciences and climate change are more important.
• Scientific Curiosity: A strong desire to learn about scientific research methods and the process of analyzing geologic records.
• Microscope Work: Comfort working under a microscope for extended periods (up to 4 hours/day).
• Teamwork: Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and collaborate with the research team.
• Organizational Skills: Ability to keep accurate records and ensure precise work is done consistently.

Prerequisites:

• No prior experience necessary, but enthusiasm is essential!
