This recruitment will be used to fill future full-time Seed Analyst 2 positions at Oregon State University (OSU).
OSU Seed Laboratory exists to provide quality control information to the seed industry for purposes of marketing and shipping. This laboratory conducts seed testing for the Oregon Seed Certification Service. The laboratory serves the Oregon Department of Agriculture and other government agencies by conducting regulatory testing and provides technical support to OSU and to the general public in numerous ways. Technical training in the form of seed schools and workshops is provided to various groups in Oregon, other states and countries. The OSU Seed Laboratory enjoys national and international acclaim as a leader in seed testing procedures.
This position is responsible for independently performing complex purity examinations on all samples submitted for testing. Employee will determine and record purity results based on pure seed, other seeds, inert matter, identify and report noxious and prohibited weed seeds, undesirable weed seeds, sod quality contaminants, or other contaminants based existing seed testing rules, international import requirements and customer requests.
This position functions as part of a team to advance the training of junior analysts on more complex and advanced purity tests. When necessary, this position assists with training of student, temporary and classified employees to conduct the initial separation on the most common species in preparation for purity or germination testing.
Three years of full-time experience performing purity, germination, or special tests on seeds such as Bluegrass or Bentgrass seeds and training providing the knowledge of AOSA and SCST rules for testing seeds; OR Two years of the above full-time experience and 12 quarter hours of college courses in the plant sciences such as botany, crop science, seed technology, agronomy, etc., and training providing knowledge of AOSA or SCST rules for testing seeds; OR A certificate of competency in seed testing from either AOSA or SCST and either 12 quarter hours of college courses in the plant sciences as described above or one year of the above full-time experience.
Requirements :
Excellent vision, hand/eye coordination.
Incumbent will be expected to sit or stand at a work station for extended periods of time and occasionally carry and lift trays of seed samples up to 20 lbs. Must be able to perform repetitive motions.
Type:
Analysts will spend the majority of their time in a sitting position looking at seeds using magnification and forceps to manipulate seeds. Some work will be performed operating equipment to separate seeds and will require some sitting, standing and lifting (<20lbs). Occasionally, special projects may require some outdoor work.
This position occasionally involves working around fumes, odors, dust, noise, and pesticide chemicals
